<xhtml:h1>Yard Work</xhtml:h1>

<xhtml:p>So, lately I've gotten into trying to do some yard work at my house. I rent half of a duplex, which overall is an L shaped house.
Between my door and the neighboors door is a little triangular patch of dirt which had been overflowing with weeds, much like the
rest of un-maintained yard is. It was too the point where you could not walk down the sidewalk to the driveway without draging
through some weeds.</xhtml:p>

<xhtml:p>Annoyingly enough the weeds that were growing there and sticking out over the sidewalk were ones that left a bunch of stickers
in your pants, shoes, socks, etc. Anything that would brush against them would end up with a sticker in it pretty much, and these stickers
were all being brought into the house, or to wherever we were going. Very annoying, and I finally had enough.</xhtml:p>

<xhtml:p>So, I decided to rip up this patch of dirt and attempt to plant a nice grass patch there. I didn't think about it from the start, but
about half-way into it, while talking to someone online about it, I decided I'd take some pictures to show what I was doing. So instead of
a before/after shot I so far have only a part-way-through and half-done shot.</xhtml:p>

<xhtml:p>You can kind of see in the pictures above how the spot looks dirty there along the house. When I started, the entire area looked like
that, and had weeds everywhere to the point you almost couldn't see the dirt. The cleaner dirt in the back where the shovel is, is the dirt I
have already sifted through to remove rocks and dead plants, and whatever else I found. There were a lot of toy parts, trash, and old tools
burried in that patch of dirt, probably from the kids that used to live next door.</xhtml:p>

<xhtml:p>After finally sifting all the rocks out, which took about a days worth of work (spread out over a few days time) I racked the dirt out so I had a
nice even layer across the entire area, and sprinkled some grass seed on by hand. I then covered the area with some lawn starter soil I bought at
walmart and gave it a watering. This is as far as I've gotten so far. I'm hoping soon the grass will start to grow, and later this year I'll
have a nice grass patch there instead of a weed bed.</xhtml:p>

<xhtml:p><xhtml:span class="articleUpdate">*Update 06/01/2008</xhtml:span> The grass has been planted for about a week now. It's started to grow and it looks ok.
Not sure how thick it'll be comming in. I didn't quite plant it properly, so a lot of the seeds may not grow well. I sprinkled more seeds on it
today when I watered it and put some dirt on it to cover up the new seeds. I've got new pictures of what it looks like today. I'll probably post
some more next week.</xhtml:p>
